Vendor Profile: Haley Mathewes

VENDOR PROFILE December 12, 2018

In the summer of 2017, Charleston based artist, Haley Mathewes, took over our Atelier and wowed everyone when she imaginatively painted one of the walls with a life sized mural of her signature figurines!

Haley has been with us as a permanent vendor ever since. The items in her booth are always fabulous and she just brought in a whole new delivery of super chic Figure Studies in lucite frames. They’re all $150 or less and make for great holiday & hostess gifts- Keep scrolling!

She also had the most charming answers (of course!) to our vendor Q&A:

When did you start painting?

I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t up to something involving paint. I have always enjoyed the process of creating and recreating - from finger painting and filling my notebooks with doodles to studying costume design in college. I loved every aspect of it! From pattern-making and architectural drafting, to figure drawing and faux bois, this really allowed me a chance to express myself creatively while exploring a whole world of form and technique.

What are your artistic influences?

I’m not sure I could pinpoint my inspiration as it truly is an ever changing source. I do find that I am so inspired by commissions that I take on. I love working with people and I especially love creating something unique with its own context, drawing inspiration from the client, as well as their space!

What piece of art is your favorite from your personal collection?

A most favorite piece in my own collection, which is not particularly full of my own work, is one that I did in a live figure drawing class in college. The model was lovely and so at ease. The piece is done in vine charcoal on brown craft paper - it is a treasure to me!

What is your favorite antique find of all time?

Without a doubt, it is a carved marble bust. It is so organic looking and abstract - as if the artist stopped before it’s completion.

If you had unlimited funds to build the house of your dreams, what would it look like?

This is a great question! I’m not sure exactly what I picture, other than that I would like for it to be stucco with great windows, and to look as if it had been around forever.

What has new motherhood taught you?

Being a first-time mother, I have learned so much. One of the most valuable things I have learned is to truly be present in the moment and to enjoy my life’s greatest blessing.

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?

I would paint, of course!

Name three things on your Christmas list.

New hardscape and landscape, a William McClure painting, and a cream bike.

What’s your biggest goal for 2019?

In 2019, I hope to complete my largest piece to date - and we would love to take Gigi for her first trip overseas.

What is one thing that always makes you smile?

Our daughter Gigi.
